Pet Women Weekly – The Adult in the Equation

Having a Little Rum Cake!

Next Monday is Christmas and that day means many things to many people. For little kids it means the magic of Santa. For a lot of adults it means responsibility.

Think about all you are responsible for: You are the one making the lists and checking them twice. Remembering the people throughout the year who have served you, or are close to you.

Do you have the right gift? Do you have a gift? Did you wrap it, send it, give it?

Yesterday, the lovely woman who does my bookkeeping was here and brought me rum cake she had made. She warned me, “There is a LOT of rum in it!” and suggested I wait to eat it after I finished my work. “Nonsense!” said I. I wanted to experience it with her there, let her see my enjoyment and pleasure in her gift. It was delicious and I am actually having a little in between my typing these words, yum!

On my end, I did not have her gift wrapped, nor card signed, nor was I prepared.

I’m writing this two weeks before Christmas. Surely I have the time, surely I will see her again prior to the day? And it seems I will not. That I have missed the opportunity for her to be as delighted as I was.

It is too late for me in this instance. And since this is being sent to you with only 4 days to go to Christmas eve, it is probably too late for you also.  I will see her right after Christmas so will delight her then and convince myself it’s even better this way, but it’s not.

I am the adult. This is my business and my responsibility and I missed the opportunity this time.

Lessons:

1. Plan ahead better so by the first week of December my gifts are purchased and wrapped.
2. Schedule my gift giving, so I can delight all those who serve me so well – Mail people, the lovely people at my nail salon, housekeeper, etc.
3. Relish the responsibility and ability that I have to delight and appreciate many people in my life.
4. Focus on the one giving, and not my embarrassment in unpreparedness. Why steal from their joy?

Hopefully this post will help you be more prepared, it may have reminded you of a couple of people who you could surprise and delight, and mostly it’s about how being a responsible adult is a gift and how we can weave our own magic to those we have in our lives.

Merry Christmas! You are a gift to me.

Blessings, Shawna

I have resurfaced!

•June 26, 2017 • Leave a Comment

Hello! After a reboot of my website – I am able to share with you once again.  Here is my Monday Mindset: My mission is to help you start your week off well! The theme this week is: How active are you being?

How active are you being?

What is your intention for the week?

Ask yourself…

Do I use the technique of asking, “What’s the next step?”

What things can I ask that question about this week?

A favorite Mind-Setting Quote:

“Active natures are rarely melancholy. Activity and sadness are incompatible.”

~ Christian Bovee

Been a while since I posted – I’ve been working on other writing, other blogs, and of course learning, learning and more learning! Thank heavens I love learning!

Come along little doggie!

However lately – after a long time it feels – I’m getting comments – and nice ones too! So here I am posting because I feel encouraged – and that’s a great people skill – to encourage others.

So – thank you for reading – thank you for commenting – thank you!

Oh – and my call to action for you is: Who can you encourage today?

What is your philosophy?

This week the theme is philosophy and it’s something I’ve been working with and on and around for more than 20 years – that we need to have our own personal philosophy.

The person who most affected this desire in me was Jim Rohn, a businessman and deep thinker who maintains that it’s our philosophy about life that determines our path and results.

 – so this is a special week for me and our first quote – though long is also wonderful.

George Matthew Adams said,

“Every one of us, unconsciously, works out a personal philosophy of life, by which we are guided, inspired, and corrected, as time goes on.

It is this philosophy by which we measure out our days, and by which we advertise to all about us the man, or woman, that we are…

It takes but a brief time to scent the life philosophy of anyone. It is defined in the conversation, in the look of the eye, and in the general mien of the person.

It has no hiding place. It’s like the perfume of the flower – unseen, but known almost instantly.

It is the possession of the successful, and the happy. And it can be greatly embellished by the absorption of ideas and experiences of the useful of this earth.”

So, what is your philosophy? Have you given it any thought?

And to help you, here is the definition of Philosophy –

The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, esp. when considered as an academic discipline

a theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior.

Our philosophy determines our behavior.

Faith Day

•October 11, 2012 • Leave a Comment

I’ll call this Thursday Faith Day because of the quote we have.

With a theme like obstacles the mind is allowed to stretch out and question.

From what do we do with the obstacles we face, to how we look at things, are they really obstacles or simply opportunities to build strength and character?

Donald Douglas gives us today’s quote,

“It is a hard rule of life, and I believe a healthy one, that no great plan is ever carried out without meeting and overcoming endless obstacles that come up and try the skill of man’s hand, the quality of his courage, and the endurance of his faith.”

Another short check list on how to live:

Skill – and when your skill is tested it sharpens the skill or allows you to learn new skills.

Courage – which we only know and understand as we are called to bring it

Faith – what do we believe?

As I go through my life and take on new ventures I am constantly confronted with things I do not know, or feel overwhelming or frightening and I have to ask myself – can I do this?

And then I must conger up my faith – my belief in myself and in my ability to learn it and use it –

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Do not fear to pioneer

•October 10, 2012 • 1 Comment

Good Wednesday to you!

Hump day brings us the longest quote on obstacles from Ralph J. Bunche who said,

“You can surmount the obstacles in your path if you are determined, courageous and hard-working.

Never be fainthearted. Be resolute, but never bitter. Bitterness will serve only to warp your personality.

Permit no one to dissuade you from pursuing the goals you set for yourselves.

Do not fear to pioneer, to venture down new paths of endeavor.

Demand and make good use of your rights, but never fail to discharge faithfully the obligations and responsibilities of good citizenship.

Be good Americans.”

This seemed terrific in a week of overcoming obstacles because it gives us a clear path:

Be determined, courageous and hard-working.

Be resolute and never bitter

Pursue the goals you’ve set for yourself

Pioneer down new paths of endeavor

Make good use for your rights

Be a good citizen

In these times of American politics what a refreshing reminder that it’s all up to us. Me and you to be the nation one person living well at a time!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!
