Thoughts of what we’re doing on this earth are normal – I imagine people of all ages have been saying to themselves –“Why am I here? What am I supposed to do with my life?

This quote from Albert Einstein may be of help to us:

“A human being is a part of a whole, called by us “universe”, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Reading this quote several times deepens its magic.

According to Einstein we are in delusion – thinking mostly about our own sphere – those closest to us – when we have all living things, all the worlds’ beauty available to experience and be a part of.

So the question might be less about what we are here for and what am I supposed to do with my life – and more: How can I experience everything and enjoy the bounty that is this life?

And as it relates to you and people skills: How do I love and enjoy people more?

The first questions, “Why am I here and what am I supposed to do with my life?” – We want answers to for selfish reasons – “What about me? What is my purpose – my role – my uniqueness?”

The second is deeper, broader and even though it’s an open and inclusive question – “How can I experience this world better and enjoy all creatures and people more?” it’s still a selfish pursuit and yet –

By expanding our minds and asking better questions – we are more connected to the whole, we make better choices because we seek outside ourselves even as we bring our deepest selves forward.

Einstein says we are in a prison of our own making – and it’s up to us to free ourselves.

You do that by the way you think – today – think magnificent thoughts!
