Emphasis Matters

This week we focus on verbal communication under our banner of clear communication – verbal meaning all things spoken – and sounded – I say that because sometimes a grunt or a sigh is a clear verbal clue. One we give and one we receive.

Each word or sound has meaning and inside each word or sound there is an emphasis which gives it deeper meaning –

What many of us do is to verbalize or speak or grunt or sign without thinking about our meaning and that makes us less clear, and easier to be misunderstood.

Let me give you an example on how our intent can be altered based on emphasis:
Saying the three word phrase: I love you

Depending on who you say it to the meaning can alter completely – for you, and for the person hearing it and we all know that are multiple loves –

Emphasis exercise:
Stress a different word in the sentence – different result:
I love you – all about the person saying it
I LOVE you – all about the emotion of love – whichever kind
I love YOU – all about them, not someone else.

Three meanings – three words – what a glorious thing – verbal communication and what options to confuse!

Today focus on where you put the emphasis on your words and watch the feedback you get – it may amaze you!
