An Environment for Ideas

B.C. Forbes shares these thoughts on ideas, “Edward H. Harriman, then undisputed ruler of several railway empires, remarked that he liked to drop into an executive’s office and find him with his feet on the desk. The chances were, he reasoned, that the man was taking time off to do nothing but think. Is it your experience – it is mine – that ideas can be hatched much more freely when not immersed in routine duties?  The subconscious mind seems to function most fruitfully when one’s nose is not on the grindstone.”

So when today can you play, think or day dream? All the reading I’ve been doing this week on ideas suggests that each of us must create an environment for ideas.  Places like – our home, work, car, where ideas can spring out often.

There’s a section in my idea book about how Jack Foster when he had just begun to teach told his students that for every problem there as a solution, an answer, an idea. He learned he was wrong.

Now he knows there are hundreds of solutions, hundreds of answers and hundreds of ideas.

Here’s an example:

As of 1940 (the last time they checked maybe) a total of 94 patents had been taken out on shaving mugs. Shaving mugs –

There are over 1,200 different kinds of barbed wire.

Enough cookbooks have been published in the United States to fill a small library.

Ideas are indeed limitless.

You create your day by the way you think! Be Present!
Go make it a magnificent day!
